Hurricane Earl is gone!

UPDATE!

I think is safe to say that Earl has now moved on. It has been quite a drama-filled day in my little world. I think it is time for a nap and hope that the heat and humidity will finally be leaving with Earl. Hope you enjoyed my coverage and found it helpful.

Hurricane Earl

My little camera did get one good shot of the wind hurling the trees around.

Hurricane Earl

Did it ever get dark too! I lit a protection candle and spent time with my tarot cards.

Hurricane Earl

My hollyhock was already leaning over but this hurricane pushed her nose right into the ground. I should have found a way to keep her upright but just couldn't with a hurt shoulder. Poor thing!

Hurricane Earl

I just had to get around my property and check on things. A lot of plants are flattened like my hollyhock but for the most part, everything is OK. The clouds are still moving wildly, occasional rain is still falling and the wind is far from gentle but I think for the most part the storm is over. I dare not go too far right now in case powerlines are holding on by a thread but wow, everything smells so good! The humidity is still unfortunately really high so everything still feels uncomfortable but at least the air smells good. I have a few windows open, want that fresh clean air inside my home.

Hurricane Earl

I just got off the phone with my mother-in-law and found out I was very lucky. She is without power until tomorrow and I keep hearing about trees falling everywhere. Here on my back deck I just have leaves and some small branches.

Hurricane Earl

This is in front of my house, so far so good, no trees around here are down that I can tell.

Hurricane Earl

This is proof of the crazy wind, a leaf pressed perhaps indefinitely against my screen door.

Hurricane Earl

Just one branch fell off on to our property, not too bad at all! And the air smells AMAZING!!! OMG, everything smells so fresh, clean and new. We haven't had even the tiniest breeze for at least a week so Earl really did bring in one hell of a breath of fresh air.

Sorry, I have no video capability to capture what was going on, wish I did. Getting a video camera is high on my priority list but not possible at the moment. I have been getting tons of phone calls which is so nice. I think the worst has definitely passed and am hoping my little camera is working properly again so I can go out and take photos of what has been going on soon.

My sister Jamie has been keeping me company during the hurricane via the phone and I lost power at least three times so there was lots of calling each other up to start again, LOL. The winds are drying down, leaves are everywhere. Going to see if I can get some photos of what's going on outside.

I am still here with power, thank goodness. The wind is really ramping up now so I am staying away from the windows and just listening to the storm in my basement. The change in the barometric pressure is bringing on a migraine and wow, my house just shook from the wind! I had zero sleep last night from the heat so I am going to rest for a little while. So far the worst thing is having to keep my windows closed, it is stifling hot in my house.

I think both bridges are now closed. Ferry service has stopped. It is time to hang out in the basement and wait for the hurricane to pass. I will be back, just need to lay my sore head down for a bit. I know someone on the Arm on Purcell's Cove Road who is without power. Q104 is on generator over on Kempt Road. Most of the North End is powerless as well. My area now has 2400 people without power, obviously I am doing OK so far. Lawrencetown and Conrad beaches are now closed.

Write this number down just in case you lose power so you can report your outage: 1(877) 428-6004

Lights flickering again, time to log out!

The leaves are coming down!

The wind is definitely picking up, had to close my kitchen window, the storm is getting much stronger and now ripping off leaves prematurely and making trees sway. For some reason my little camera is acting oddly, no longer focusing so I have switched to using my Rebel. I really hope that it is just this storm's influence affecting my camera. It could be my nervous electrical energy.

There are now thousands of people in my neighbourhood without power. I heard that Cole Harbour in Dartmouth has lost power. OMG, that wind!!!! It's crazy and there go the lights flickering again. Crap, gotta this post up now!!!

The road to Peggy's Cove has been officially closed by the RCMP so storm chasers can not get to it. The eye of the storm is heading towards Halifax and the South Shore which is very bad news for me and my extended family. A shopping mall has lost power and is officially closed. Last I heard the Dartmouth ferry was still going but the storm is going to really be hitting in an hour so I have a feeling that will be one of the last ones for a while.

My friend Kelly (thanks Kelly!) wrote me to let me know that over 200 people in my area have lost power and I am not surprised. As I panicked while making a huge breakfast of eggs, toast, bacon... the lights were flickering and did go completely off for just a second. Thankfully my tummy is now full and I absolutely have to get in a shower before the storm really hits hard.

The wind and rain is coming in cycles and so far is strong but not too bad but I know Earl is on his way. There are almost 30,000 people in Nova Scotia without power. I think it is just a matter of time. I will try and keep updating as much as I can, while I can.

Kitchen window open to Earl

When I first woke up, all I could hear was the wind but here comes the rain!!! I opened up the windows to let the air in my house and fill it up with new energy.

My Deck

I went out on my deck and you can't tell from the trees but they were moving a ton, you could feel Earl's approach.

My mother-in-law just called and said that Earl is a hurricane and the path has moved much closer to us which I knew would happen because of the steaming hot temperatures we have been getting.

My lights are already flickering, the storm is definitely here. Halifax got the rain before me, about 45 minutes ago. Filling up my tub with water and gotta make some breakfast while I can!

So that is the update right now and I want to get this up while I still can because who knows if I will have power soon!!!!

~ Suzie

Earl has now been downgraded to a tropical storm which is a wonderful relief! The first little bit of rain came at 1:30 am, just enough to wake me up and then totally stop. Then a late phone call and a screaming cat have me up at 3 am, this is the warmest night in my house so far this heat wave.

There is finally some wind in the air, hope that Earl will come and cool things off. I can't take this heat much longer! No air conditioning, my chronically frigid basement is now hot so I have zero relief. Come on Earl, be our hero!

Yawn...I hate waking at the witching hour myself...storm excitement in the air. Off subject, don't know if you've been but I went to a great little shop 'Into the Mystic' that you'd probably like, it's out Cole Harbour/Dartmouth way.

Stay cool, the breeze is blowing.

I don't know if the temperature cooled off for you yet, but hope it will!
We got up this morning here in SW Ontario to 14 degrees celsius and high winds!! Just a few days ago it was closer to 40! What a roller coaster :)

Suzie, Make a thermos of boiling water so if the power goes out you can make yourself a warm drink later.

oOOh. I want more pictures! Does your rebel not have video? That would be amazing. Not that I want you to be in the path of the storm. I hope you keep safe and keep cool. And hope your headache goes away.

It's raining now here too and the wind is about 20mph with gusts up to 30. And still only 12 degrees C. I actually wish I was there with you. I'd take the hurricane to have some heat back!

So glad and relieved to hear that you are safe and sound and that you get to eat HOT food! I've been watching the progress on CBC as well, and that is one heck of a storm! I guess you can literally breathe a sigh of relief and fresh air.

Very sweet of Jamie to hang out with you during the storm. Just a tip, it's always good to have at least one simple, corded phone in the house that does not require an adapter to be plugged in. At least if there is a power failure, the phone should still work (unless of course the phone lines get knocked out as well). That way you can still keep in touch or call if there is an emergency.

I'm so happy to hear that you got out of Earl pretty much unscathed. One never knows when it comes to nature the wrath she can blow in or out at a moments notice. The pictures are very nice and I love all the trees across from your home. I wish I had trees:( My favorite photo is the one of the leaves blown up against the curb- or what looks like a curb to me. Happy Labor Day--stress free:) Angie
