Yes, I am the crazy lady on the street once again, tying long pieces of garbage bags into my trees and I can tell you, I didn't want to do it. But there is a woodpecker who has decided to attack our roof on a regular basis and I am freaking out! The damage that could cause to our roof is mind blowing to me.

I read that the black flapping would scare them off but nope, he keeps coming back. I keep going out there making noise with pots and pans (see, the crazy lady forever) and he is getting used to my insane antics.
We do not have termites on the east coast thank goodness but we can not figure out why he is focused on our roof. Apparently sometimes they do it to mark territory or call a mate. We have trees all around us so I am just feeling attacked and scared that he has gone serious damage to our roof. I don't know what else to do!
Please, if you have any advice, we need it!!!

Why Is Your Woodpecker Pecking There? - from http://www.squidoo.com/get_rid_of_woodpeckers
Woodpeckers are looking for food when they are pecking at your house. Woodpeckers eat carpenter and carpenter ants. Check your house for evidence of these insects. This alone will not solve your problem if woodpecker has marked his territory. However, the woodpecker may return in the future if you do not remove the insects.
You Need to Get Rid of Woodpeckers Quickly
Once a woodpecker has selected your house as a pecking site, it will create a territory for itself. Woodpeckers will habitually return to the same area, so it is important to remove them from the area before they become comfortable.
Number One Thing to Try:
Coat the existing hole and the surrounding area with a sticky substance. Woodpeckers do not like a tacky feel on their feet. There are inexpensive products available produce the desired stickiness.
Suet feeders.
Woodpeckers love suet. Purchase an inexpensive suet feeder at a local store and place it tantilizingly close to where your woodpecker is drilling. Move the feeder to another part of your yard after the woodpecker has fed on the suet for a few days.
Scare the Woodpecker Away
Shiny and flashy objects may scare your woodpecker -- the shinier the better. Bright, shiny things will reflect sunlight and give the woodpecker the sense of danger in its territory. Movable objects accomplish the same thing. Think of tin foil, crepe paper, wind chimes.
Make the Woodpecker Unwelcome
Squrting water from a garden hose will certainly make your house an unwelcome place for woodpeckers. When you hear the woodpecker, start spraying immediately.
Block Off the Area
Netting products can be used to cordon off the area where your woodpecker is making damage. Although it's not attractive or easiest solution, netting will be effective in depriving the woodpecker from its preferred drilling site.
Trapping a Woodpecker
Professional trappers are trained to catch woodpeckers (remember, they are a protected species). Most bird trappers will give you an up-front cost to trap the woodpecker and remove it from your area.
You Can Get Rid of Woodpeckers
Woodpeckers are beautiful and fascinating creatures who can unfortunately cause an great amount of damage to your home. You should get rid of woodpeckers immediately. Covering their hole and scaring woodpeckers are effective tactics. You can lure woodpeckers away from your home with suet feeders or you can block off their feeding area with netting. Good luck in your war against Woody!
Thanks Michelle! We put up your beautiful wind chime this morning, hoping that the sound and shininess will help scare it away. I think they're trying to make a lot of noise but I'm scare of the damage they're doing. I don't want to hurt them but they're getting used to me banging pots and pans (although my neighbours are probably not super thrilled with my antics). I'm so exhausted, I have no energy for this and no money to fix the damage, if there is any.
Our house has wood siding and they are forever pecking at it!!
We have suet feeders up and they do eat from them but they like to hide things in our wood!
How terrible! I wasn't aware that woodpeckers would attack houses. I hope they move on soon to somewhere else.
