My Electronic Scrapbook: The Glories of Spring in Vancouver, British Columbia - 2001

Vancouver, British Columbia, Spring 2001

Nature in Vancouver is unlike any other place I have ever lived. You will see the weirdest, wildest plants! Of course I photographed the more normal stuff a lot too but here is a little tour of nature our first spring in Vancouver.

Calla lilies were always one of those exotic flowers that I never thought could grow in Canada. When I worked at a flower shop eons ago we sold these for $10 each. Here they were just growing in someone's garden!

The pretty flowers just could not be contained! Climbing, poking out of their fences, reaching for the sunlight...

This bearded iris still blows me away! At least that is what I think it is. I have never been good with the names of flowers. I just photograph them, LOL.

Here was my first monkey puzzle tree. I know, bizarre right?! Seriously, the gardens in Vancouver were wild and unpredictable but the farther we explored, the more and more we came across this unusual tree.

As much as I loved photographing nature, I found myself wanting to do more with photography. I also started taking more artistic shots of non-nature stuff.

I think this is the photo where I decided I wanted to really understand photography and learn about it as an art, not just as a means of documenting my life. It was in Vancouver I discovered I wanted to be not just a writer but a photographer as well.

And so my love affair with photography began... Too bad I had no idea what I was doing!

I couldn't believe the flora the first time I was in Vancouver too. It was like being in a completely foreign land that was not part of Canada as I knew it.
